Neighbor Warming Neighbor was launched on Saturday, October 25, 2008 with 40 volunteers and team leaders spending the day to weatherize 17 homes. On Saturday, November 15, 2008 despite rainy weather 19 volunteers weatherized an additional 10 homes. To date we have weatherized homes in Albion, Belmont, Burnham, Freedom, Knox, Montville, Thorndike, Troy and Unity. Response has been positive with additional contributions of resources along with requests for help from more homeowners.
Project representatives attended the State hosted training at the Kennebec Valley Community College to determine how to organize our own group training, which was completed on October 18, 2008. Prior to the workdays, a group of trained volunteers visited each home to assess needs and take an inventory. Volunteers spoke with homeowners about their concerns before developing a plan of action. To make good use of time, a project list was established and kits of materials were assembled in advance. For most of the homes being weatherized, foundations were wrapped in plastic, spray foam was used to block holes in basements, attic hatches were insulated and weather stripping and/or caulking was applied to doors and windows. In some homes, ductwork was inspected and repaired, pipes were wrapped, plastic window treatment was added, fire place inserts were constructed and foam cellar doors were built.
During both the work days assistance was given to people from all economic levels. Many homeowners agreed to support the project through their own volunteer involvement and/or by donating funds for materials. Volunteers who went into neighbor’s homes appreciated the opportunity to participate in their lives and be part of a true community. Most volunteers had never met the people they helped and made new connections. In some cases the rapport was strong enough to enable a return visit.
